When To Chant
The first way to incorporate chanting into your daily life is on an "as needed basis". It is possible to chant during activity, for example walking, hiking, and running, riding the subway to work, driving to school or work. This is not ideal but if that the only way you are going to fit it in then do it.
The second is a dedicated practice. There is no established number of times that we must chant. The amount depends on individual circumstances. You could choose a mantra or sutra and repeat it every day, chanting it 3, 9, 27, 54 or 108 times. You would use a Buddhist necklace to help you keep track of the counting.
How To Chant
Depends on the environment:
- Chanting out at medium voice. The rule of thumb is harmonising with other chanters' voices.
- Chanting silently but the lips and tongue still move.
- Chanting in the mind.
The speed should not be too fast and our pronunciation should not be slurred. We must maintain a medium pitch and chant calmly, resolutely and steadily.
